Your Beautiful Bed — Part I

    December 07, 2021 2 min read

We should LOVE our beds - that’s my starting point with this. They should be comfortable - not too soft, not too hard, just right. They should be the right size, not too big, not too small. I like a high bed myself, but not so high that I need steps to get into it, just a good height for sitting on. At this point we are channelling Goldilocks, but I am also deeply interested in how a bed  looks. And the look is changing.

The new slimmer mattresses are not only more comfortable, they look sleeker than ultra-thick mattresses, and if you pair them with a sprung slatted base, you are liberated from the space-sucking black hole which is a boxspring bed base. So what do you do with all that space?

If you have a hardwood floor, the answer is simple - let it be!  Reflected light under a bed magically makes the bed seem lighter, taking up less space so the room looks bigger, clearer.

If your bedroom is carpeted the effect is less pronounced, so having stowing space in the bedroom right where you need it might be best for you - at any rate it’s a better option than a hollow, spidery boxspring.

Should you be stuck with your boxspring or emotionally attached to it, you will need to cover it.  A tailored bedskirt will do the job nicely - we make them to order at Rough Linen but I’m not pushing them, since I’d far rather you invest in a bedstead with a sprung slatted base (not a platform bed, that will whack your shins). Yes, I put a lot of thought into this, you can thank me later.

    Parts 2 & 3 coming up!
